Baripada (Odisha), Jun 24 (PTI) A court in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district on Monday sentenced a 17-year-old youth to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a 4-year-old girl two years ago years, an official said.

Mayurbhanj district children's court presiding judge Satyanarayan Patra also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on the convict, said another special public prosecutor Krushna Chandra Das.

In case of default in payment, he will have to remain in jail for an additional period of two months, Das said.

The judgment was pronounced on the basis of the statement of the minor victim, 14 witnesses and a medical report, he said.

The convict youth will be kept in the Rourkela (juvenile home) until he attains the age of 21, and after that he will be taken to the Baripada circular jail, Das said.

The incident took place in Upperbeda village under the jurisdiction of Jharpokaria police station on June 15, 2022.

The young man took the victim to an isolated place and sexually assaulted her.

Later, based on the victim's father's complaint, the Jharpokharia police registered a case under various sections of the IPC and the POCSO Act.
