NYPD identifies victim, suspect in fatal Staten Island stabbing

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Police have identified Joel Badillo, 41, as the man fatally stabbed in his home community of Stapleton.

Carlos Rivera, 37, of Targee Street in Stapleton, was arrested and faces murder charges in connection with Monday's brutal killing in the 200 block of Broad Street near Gordon Street, according to a release from the NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Public Information. .

Officers responding around 3:47 p.m. to a 911 call alerting them to the assault found Badillo suffering from a stab wound to the chest. EMS responded and transported Badillo to Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze where he succumbed to his injuries, according to the police statement.

In addition to second-degree murder, Rivera was also charged by police with first-degree manslaughter, first-degree assault, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, tampering with physical evidence and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree. fourth degree.

A large NYPD presence was visible in the area where a huge blood splatter was visible on the street corner.

An NYPD helicopter hovered overhead.

The stabbing is only the second homicide to take place on Staten Island this year and the first since January.

By this time in 2023, there had already been 10 homicides, according to NYPD CompStat data.
