Nuneaton Street renamed in memory of teenage soldier

A Nuneaton road has been renamed in memory of a teenage soldier killed in action in Afghanistan.

Rifleman Louis Carter died in Afghanistan in August 2009, at the age of 18, while trying to save another soldier.

Clinic Drive, in the Riversley Park neighborhood where he grew up, now bears his name.

Family, friends and comrades of Rifleman Carter gathered in Nuneaton on Saturday for a ceremony to unveil the new sign.

Denise Carter, his mother, paid tribute to her son and said she would always like a road to be named after him.

“It’s the most poignant place it could be,” she said of the road’s location in Riversley Park.

Mrs Carter has previously told the BBC of her memories of her son attending the local nursery and school, as well as playing football in the park.

Brigadier Charles Calder, who commanded Rifleman Carter in Helmand province, also paid tribute to him at the event.

“He had just finished his training in April and he went to probably the most difficult place in Afghanistan at the time. So it was a real baptism of fire,” he said .

“But at the same time, he fit in very quickly and he was clearly a very, very popular member of his platoon.”

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council approved the proposal to rename the road in March.
