North Texas man accused of hitting cyclists while under the influence outside DFW Airport

NORTH TEXAS — A Fort Worth man is behind bars, accused of hitting two cyclists while under the influence of alcohol near Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on Monday, according to airport police DFW.

The crash happened near the intersection of Freeport Parkway and North Airfield Drive in Irving. This was captured on video which was later published on X.

The video, time stamped around 6 p.m. on June 17, shows a white 2020 Subaru Forester, allegedly driven by Benjamin Hylander, 31, approaching the group of cyclists from behind and hitting two of them. A cyclist, Thomas Geppert, 69, was also knocked down..

Geppert was transported to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Grapevine with a serious laceration. The other victim, Deborah Eads, 65, was treated at the scene for a serious laceration.

Some of the cyclists followed Hylander's vehicle to a Shell gas station and told him to come back to the crash scene, the police report states.

Hylander told investigators he had been drinking beer at Grapevine an hour before the crash, according to the report. A breathalyzer test showed his blood alcohol level exceeded the minimum threshold for a DWI charge of 0.15. Police found six empty Voodoo Ranger beer cans during a search of Hylander's vehicle.

Hylander is in custody at the Tarrant County Correctional Center, charged with two counts of intoxicated assault with a vehicle, one count of accident with injury and one count of driving while impaired. 'drunkenness. His employer is listed as American Airlines.

American Airlines says the carrier decided Wednesday that Hylander will no longer be in service.
