North Las Vegas police fire 92 shots after man raises loaded gun during crash

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – The North Las Vegas Police Department has released body-worn camera footage after an officer-involved shooting in which police fired 92 shots at an armed suspect.

The shooting happened on June 15 around 9 p.m. Officers responded to the intersection of Craig Road and North 5th Street for reports of a four-vehicle crash.


Witnesses told police that a driver, who was later identified as Julian McCoy, 57, of Las Vegas, by the Clark County Coroner's Office, was driving a silver car northbound on North 5th Street , failed to stop at a red light and crashed. with vehicles traveling on Craig Road.

Witnesses at the scene said McCoy, who police described as a five-time registered felon in Nevada, threatened people, emergency personnel and officers with a loaded gun at the crash scene.

Multiple callers told the NLVPD dispatcher that McCoy allegedly caused the accident and that he had a gun. Another person said McCoy threatened him with a gun as he approached the car, police said.

When North Las Vegas firefighters arrived on scene to render aid, they reported that they had also been threatened by McCoy who was armed with a gun, according to police.

When officers arrived, they said they attempted to deescalate the situation and repeatedly ordered McCoy to drop the weapon and exit the vehicle. However, police said he ignored commands and raised his gun at officers.

Police say 7 officers discharged their weapons and McCoy was shot multiple times.

In the video, several gunshots were heard towards the suspect's car. A total of 92 shots were fired at McCoy by officers during the incident, according to the NLVPD.

No information has been released by police on the total number of bullets hit by McCoy.

McCoy was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers also recovered McCoy's .22 caliber rifle which was found in his car loaded with 15 bullets, as well as alcohol and drug paraphernalia at the scene.

The seven officers who fired the shots were identified by the NLVPD.

The officers have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the results of the investigation in accordance with department policy.

Had McCoy survived, he would have faced the following charges.

  • Assault with a deadly weapon on a protected person (x8)
  • Ex-felon in possession of a firearm
  • DUI involving collision
  • Assault with a deadly weapon
  • Possession of a firearm under the influence

McCoy's preliminary toxicology screen came back positive for cocaine, fentanyl, ethylnol and methamphetamine, according to police.

Police records show McCoy had an extensive criminal history that included drug offenses, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, robbery and kidnapping. He was on probation in Nevada for a prior theft conviction. He was also a five-time registered felon in Nevada. He was also the subject of a non-extraditable arrest warrant in Texas for assault.

Following the police-involved shooting, four people were treated at the scene for minor injuries. A female passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the initial crash was taken to hospital with minor injuries, police said.

911 audio recordings were also released by the NLVPD on Thursday.
