North End restaurateur Patrick Mendoza arrested for turning off GPS device, police say

Patrick Mendoza, the North End restaurateur charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting a man he had argued with for years, was arrested Saturday after turning off the GPS monitoring device a judge ordered him to wear , the police said.

On Saturday around 10:15 p.m., officers went to the residence on North Bennet Street in Mendoza after an arrest warrant was issued for a probation violation, police said. When Mendoza peacefully surrendered to police, the GPS device was not attached to his ankle as required, police said.

Mendoza allegedly told police he cut it off because “I’m tired of it and I’m tired of it.”

He also told police he was stressed about his ongoing criminal case.

Mendoza was arrested on a felony warrant and has remained in custody since Saturday.

Mendoza, 54, was charged with assault, murder, assault with a dangerous weapon and other crimes after allegedly shooting Rocco Giovanello, 60, with a snub-nosed revolver outside Modern Pastry, a popular Hanover Street bakery last year.

Charges against Mendoza are pending in Suffolk Superior Court, where he is expected to appear Monday on charges of violating bail conditions.

Mendoza has pleaded not guilty.
