Nitheesha Kandula, 23-year-old Indian student, reported missing in US last week, found and safe

A 23-year-old Indian student missing in the United States since May 28 has been found safe, police said. Police Chief John Guttierez of the California State University, Saint Bernardo Police Department posted on X, formerly Twitter, that Nitheesha Kandula had been located. However, he did not give details on how and where she was found.

“The missing student identified in this bulletin, reported missing on May 28, 2024 in Los Angeles, has been found and is safe!” he said in a post on X.

Nitheesha Kandula went missing on May 28 and was last seen in Los Angeles before that. She is a student at California State University San Bernardino and her missing person report was filed on May 30, Police Chief John Guttierez informed in an article on X.

Several cases of Indian students going missing or found dead in the United States have been reported this year. In April, an Indian student, Mohammad Abdul Arfath, 25, was found dead in Cleveland, in the US state of Ohio, after going missing in March. He hails from Hyderabad and was a computer science student at Cleveland University.

In March, Amarnath Ghosh, a trained Indian classical dancer, was shot dead while taking an evening walk in Missouri, United States. The 34-year-old was a trained Kuchipudi dancer and was pursuing an MFA in dance at Washington University in St. Louis.

In February, Sameer Kamath, a 23-year-old Indian-American student, was found dead. It was later learned that he had committed suicide. He was a student at Purdue University in the US state of Indiana. Another Indian-American IT executive, Vivek Taneja, 41, died after being attacked outside a Japanese restaurant on February 2 in Washington. He died from life-threatening injuries.

In January, Akul Dhawan, an 18-year-old Indian-American student, was found dead outside a college campus. He died of hypothermia after “acute alcohol intoxication and prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures,” according to the Champaign County, Illinois, coroner's office.
