Nighttime chase on I-395 ends in big crash, search for suspect near Shirlington

A drone, a helicopter and at least three police agencies helped apprehend a driver who crashed during a chase early Monday morning.

The crash occurred shortly after 1 a.m. as Virginia State Police were pursuing a black Chevrolet Camaro from I-395 to Arlington Mill Drive near Shirlington. State troopers initially attempted to stop the Camaro for reckless driving on southbound I-395, according to a VSP spokesperson.

Traffic camera video shows the Camaro approaching the intersection of Arlington Mill and S. Walter Reed Drive at a high speed, moments before it crashed and overturned, stopping on or near the Four Mile Run Trail before the driver fled on foot. .

“Crash, crash, it’s a rollover, it’s serious,” an officer radioed to the dispatcher. “Bailout – westbound into the woods. »

The car was reported stolen and a gun was found inside, according to scanner traffic. Officers requested the Fairfax County Police helicopter and said they were launching a drone to aid in the search.

“The suspect was apprehended with the assistance of Arlington and Alexandria police shortly thereafter,” the state police spokesperson told ARLnow. “Charges are pending. »

VSP was unable to provide additional information on expected charges or the name of the suspect. There's no first word on injuries either.
