More than 10 Nigerian teenage girls trafficked to Ghana for prostitution by a syndicate have been rescued.

This was disclosed by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM).

The victims, aged 15, 16 and 18, mostly from Imo State, were allegedly lured from Nigeria to Ghana.

However, the arrowhead of the trafficking network was arrested by Ghanaian authorities.

According to Dabiri-Erewa, the girls were rescued by the Nigerians in Diaspora Organization (NIDO).

In a viral video seen by NewsBand showing the aftermath of the rescue, a NIDO representative said: “We just rescued all these children from one person, innocent Nigerian children who were brought here to do what they would not have wanted to do. They are powerless. They selected them and sent them into prostitution and they collected money from these innocent children.

While expressing surprise at the situation, Dabiri-Erewa took to social media to urge the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to intervene.

“These are young girls trafficked to Ghana for prostitution. We thank Chief Callistus, President of NIDO Ghana, for ensuring the arrest of the perpetrator. I'm sure NAPTIP will follow up, it's very heartbreaking.

Dabiri-Erewa further revealed that another group of girls had been rescued and assured that legal action would be taken against the perpetrator of the crime in Ghana.

Efforts are also underway to repatriate rescued girls to Nigeria.

However, insisting on the responsibility of traffickers, Dabiri-Erewa stressed: “They are worse than the drug lords! And as long as they move freely, young, innocent children will continue to be trafficked! »
