Nigerian teen wins scholarship to study at Stanford, MIT, Yale and Penn

Emmanuela Ilok, a 17-year-old student, received a scholarship to study software engineering at some universities in the United States.

Universities include Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Yale University, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, and Columbia University.

Education activist and CEO of Educare, Alex Onyia, revealed this in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, May 26, 2024.

Onyia said Ilok was awarded the Best International General Certificate of Secondary Education in Nigeria by the British Council, adding that the student had developed software that uses machine learning to detect breast cancer in women, with a detection accuracy of 91%.

He noted: “Emmanuela Ilok was awarded the Best Country Award in IGCSE in Nigeria by the British Council. She also earned a full scholarship to study software engineering at Stanford, MIT, Yale, UPenn, Princeton, and Columbia University.

“She built software that uses machine learning to detect women with breast cancer, and so far its detection accuracy is 91%.

“I spent over an hour listening to her today and I can tell you we have a superstar in her.

“We have many hidden Emmanuelas in Nigeria and we must uncover and support them. It’s Nigeria’s time to shine!
