Nigerian sex worker sentenced to 5 years in prison for trafficking young girls for prostitution

An Asokwa Circuit Court has sentenced a Nigerian sex worker known for trafficking young girls for prostitution in Konongo, Ashanti Region, to five years of hard labor imprisonment for human trafficking humans and aggression.

Rose Ikem, 40, will also compensate four of her victims, whom she lured from Nigeria, for GH24,000, with each of them receiving GH6,000.00.

His latest victims were aged 17 to 24.

According to the police prosecution, the accused trafficked young girls from Nigeria to Konongo, exploited them in prostitution, some of them being subjected to abuse.

On April 23, 2024, the police received a complaint from a resident of Konongo regarding the treatment of the victims by the accused.

The police went to the residence in the Konongo SSNIT area of ​​Ikem but noticed his absence.

According to ASP Stephen Ofori, who led the police chase, police detected that the victims were locked in a room and the whereabouts of the accused were unknown.

The police then laid an ambush until the accused resurfaced and was subsequently arrested.

When the accused was forced to open the room, the police rescued two victims (name anonymous) and two others who had escaped were rescued the next day with the help of the complainant.

The court, presided over by His Honor Fred Obikyere, heard how Ikem charged his victims, who had worked between 3 months and 2 weeks, to pay him GH500 daily. This is a total of GH89,000.

According to ASP Ofori, whenever the victims failed to achieve their goal, the accused would physically attack them, causing one of the victims to fracture the left hand.

The court sentenced the defendant to 5 years of hard labor for trafficking and 12 months for causing harm. The two sentences will be carried out simultaneously.
