Nigerian couple sentenced to long prison terms for human trafficking and operating a brothel

In a landmark ruling, a couple have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms after being found guilty of human trafficking and running a brothel. The Pretoria High Court has convicted Jude Ikenna Ijegulu, a 34-year-old Nigerian national, and his 29-year-old partner, Elizabeth Botes, of Centurion, Pretoria.

Ijegulu was sentenced to two life sentences for two counts of rape and a further two years for being in the country illegally. Additionally, the court ordered that his name be added to the national register of Segxwal offenders.

According to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), the couple ran a brothel in Centurion from November 2016 to September 2017. They kept two women captive, supplying them with drugs and subjecting them to physical and sexual violence. The women were forced to provide segxwal services to their clients under threat and duress.

Lumka Mahanjana, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Gauteng, said she was satisfied with the court's decision. “We welcome the convictions. The court found that the couple had violated the human trafficking law. Ijegulu enslaved the two victims and gave them drugs,” Mahanjana said.

This case highlights the harsh penalties faced for human trafficking and segxwal exploitation in South Africa, as authorities continue to crack down on these heinous crimes.
