NIDCOM repatriates nine Nigerian teenage girls trafficked to Ghana for prostitution (video)


The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) successfully repatriated nine Nigerian teenage girls allegedly trafficked to Ghana for prostitution. The girls returned to Nigeria on Friday, June 14 and arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos at around 9:55 p.m.

In an announcement on its official X account on Saturday, June 15, NIDCOM shared a video of the girls' arrival and detailed the rescue operation. The commission attributed the successful repatriation to a coordinated effort led by NIDCOM President and CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, alongside officials of the Imo State Government, including the Vice President Rt. Hon. Chyna Amara Iwuanyanwu and the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Nkechinyere Ugwu.

Upon arrival, the girls were profiled and handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further care. “Honourable Abike mentioned that the rescued girls were handed over to NAPTIP and their respective states for rehabilitation and counselling,” NIDCOM said.

In a statement, Abike Dabiri-Erewa stressed the importance of adequate rehabilitation and support for the victims. “The girls are being provided with appropriate rehabilitation and counseling services, courtesy of NAPTIP Nigeria and the Imo and Plateau State Governments,” he added. she says.

Additionally, NIDCOM has confirmed that the trafficker responsible for the ordeal has been arrested and charged in Ghana, marking an important step towards justice for the victims.

This operation highlights NIDCOM’s commitment to protecting Nigerian citizens abroad and combating human trafficking. The successful return and rehabilitation of these young girls highlights the collaborative efforts of various government agencies to address these critical issues.
