NIDCOM confirms return of 10 trafficked girls to Ghana

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has revealed that ten Nigerian teenage girls who were allegedly trafficked to Ghana for prostitution have returned safely to Nigeria.

The girls, all under the age of 18, were allegedly lured from Nigeria to Ghana. In a viral video showing the girls after their rescue, a NIDCOM official said: “We just rescued all these girls from one person, innocent Nigerian children who were brought here to do what they wouldn't have not wanted to do. .

“They are powerless. They selected them and sent them into prostitution and they collected money from these innocent children.

NIDCOM Chairperson, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, however, confirmed in a post on her handle

Dabiri-Erewa said the girls were accompanied by officials of the Imo State government and were handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and their respective states for rehabilitation and counseling.

She also reported that the alleged trafficker, a man who lured the girls from Nigeria under pretexts, was arrested and charged in Ghana.

Dabiri-Erewa stressed the need for a permanent solution to eradicate human trafficking in the country, urged parents to always ask where their children are when they are taken by relatives or friends and encouraged collective efforts to ensure that traffickers are identified and arrested.
