Nicholas Nathaniel Baker killed in Kershaw County crash

KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities have released the name of an Elgin-area man who died in a crash early Sunday morning in Kershaw County.

Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 2 a.m. Sunday on Veterans Row near Chestnut Road. Based on preliminary details, Ridgeway said a 2014 Toyota pickup truck was heading north on Veterans Row when the vehicle left the left side of the road and struck a guardrail.

The crash left the driver, identified by coroner David West as Nicholas Nathaniel Baker, 41, dead at the scene. West said the victim's cellphone alerted authorities to the incident through an “accident detection” feature. West said the victim was not wearing a seat belt.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash.
