Newport News man arrested in death of 4-month-old son: police

Aaron Howard-Westbrook Sr., 21, was charged with second-degree murder and two counts of child abuse/neglect causing serious injury and intentional injury.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A Newport News man was arrested earlier this month in connection with the death of his 4-month-old son, police said Wednesday.

Aaron Howard-Westbrook Sr., 21, was charged with second-degree murder and two counts of child abuse/neglect causing serious injury and intentional injury.

The Newport News Police Department said the investigation began on Oct. 6, 2023, when Child Protective Services contacted an infant taken to the hospital with undetermined injuries.

The child later died on November 1, 2023.

Police say the charges against Howard-Westbrook were filed after the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the child's death a homicide based on further medical analysis. Police did not say what the child's injuries were.

Police said Howard-Westbrook was arrested on May 3.

“Police Chief Steve Drew would like to thank the NNPD personnel who worked diligently on this case,” the police department wrote in a press release.
