New York secures 275 acres of open space near Owasco Lake

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that New York State, in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy, has protected 275 acres of land in Cayuga County. This includes a 203-acre addition to Fillmore Glen State Park and 72 acres of forested wetlands in Venice. Funded by the State Department of Environmental Conservation's Water Quality Improvement Project program, these efforts aim to protect water quality and promote outdoor recreation.

“The Finger Lakes region is a treasure, and expanding protected wetlands ensures their preservation,” Hochul said. “We are protecting our environment and enhancing the recreational and economic value of New York for future generations.”

The new protected areas will improve hiking trails and the natural swimming pool at Fillmore Glen State Park, while Venice Wetlands will help filter water before it reaches Owasco Lake, serving more than 40,000 people. The projects also support wildlife and provide new recreational opportunities like hiking and bird watching.
