New weapon types in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree: Odachi, martial arts, more

The upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree DLC for Elden Ring is expected to feature a number of new weapon types for Tarnished to get their hands on.

Shadow of the Erdtree is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated releases of 2024. It is expected to include a new area that will be larger than Limgrave, as well as eight new weapons for players to use in combat.

Thanks to recent previews, we now have details on each new weapon type in the Elden Ring DLC. So that's everything we know about Shadow of the Erdtree's new weapons.

The 8 new weapon types in the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC

In an interview with Famitsu, Miyazaki gave fans of the Elden Ring fight something to get excited about. “Eight new weapon types have been added. Of course, there are also additions to existing weapon types,” he said.

Beyond this interview, a recent series of previews for influencers and media revealed that Miyazaki had not mentioned. The list of all new weapon types coming to Shadow of the Erdtree is as follows:

Great Katanas: Odachi

Described by Miyazaki as “fairly classic large Japanese katanas”, the Odachi coming to Elden Ring sound like they would function as some sort of greatsword variant of Katanas. Although we have Yura's Nagikiba in the base game which is much larger than the other Elden Ring Katanas, it does not have its own classification like these new swords.

This is good news for players who like the aesthetic and built-in bleed of Katanas but want a little more punch. Hopefully this extra size translates into more damage from Poise.

Duel Shields

Another of the eight new weapon types in the Elden Ring DLC is what Miyazaki called “Duelling Shields.” This new type of weapon actually appears in the trailer and can be seen in action during a fight with Messmer the Impaler.

They resemble an elongated rectangular shield with two blades protruding from each end, similar to the popular Twinblade weapon type. Apparently the weapon will have offensive and defensive capabilities, which seems obvious.

The Duel Shield can be seen in the left hand of this tarnished warrior.

Reverse Hand Swords

There is some dispute surrounding the translation of this particular weapon, which has been called both “Gyakute ken” and “Sakatemochi”. What is not in question is their function.

These Reverse Hand or Reverse Grip swords are held so that the blades extend outward toward the elbow. They can be seen in action during the trailer and appear to have a fighting style that will require some dexterity.

Throwing daggers

Yes, you can already craft some throwable knives, but from what Miyazaki described, the Throwing Daggers will be a completely new weapon that can be permanently equipped. Apparently they “turn all attacks into throws.”

Like some of the other types of weapons mentioned by Miyazaki, they can be seen in the trailer when a tarnished repeatedly throws them at an enemy. Another new weapon that seems to be focused on dexterity.

Martial Arts

One of the most exciting new weapons in the Elden Ring DLC confirmed by Miyazaki is martial arts. While not technically a weapon, they will make your Tarnished look like a monk in other RPGs.

Whether or not you need to equip anything for this style of fighting remains to be seen, but the elaborate kick shown in the trailer was a highlight. Players are already planning a fisticuff-fueled showdown with Horah Loux.

We will definitely try the fist route.

Perfume bottles

Those familiar with the Perfumer enemies in Elden Ring will recognize them. This new weapon allows you to scatter elemental dust everywhere with no resource limit.

You can damage enemies with poison, ignite them with fire, or shock them with lightning damage. There may be additional elemental types that have yet to be revealed, introducing a new combat style heavily focused on targeting enemy weaknesses.

Heavy attacks with Perfume Bottles disperse dust in a 360-degree arc around the player, making them perfect for taking on large monsters.

beast claws

Beast Claws are like the existing fist and claw weapons in Elden Ring, but these new additions give players a completely different moveset. Pictures shown reveals an incredibly erratic and agile combat model that looks incredibly sleek.

Their fast attacks make them incredibly useful for triggering status effects like Bleed, Frostbite, or Scarlet Rot. It remains to be seen whether some will have access to it.

Great Light Swords

This variation of Great Swords, new in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, offers multiple hits with a single button press, according to content creators like Iron Pineapple. Fast and strong, the Light Great Swords offer different attack positions thanks to their war ashes.

A successful counterguard will deliver three hits instead of one. However, they may also lack the usual Poise damage of standard greatswords.

The fluid attacks of the Light Great Swords are closer to the Curved Great Swords.

These are all new weapon types from Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. We also saw a large throwable pot and a rapid-fire crossbow, but these appear to be variants of existing weapons.
