New Springfield Fire Station Deserves Many Thanks

Recently, Springfield reached another milestone with the ribbon cutting and opening of the new Fire Station No. 8, located on Rickard Road west of Veterans Parkway. This is a “state-of-the-art” post-pandemic fire station and historic modernization that will have a useful life serving public safety over the next 50 to 75 years.

It was great to see many city and state officials come together in unison to celebrate this important historical event. Unfortunately, two people who were instrumental in building not only this new fire station but also two other new stations currently under construction were not recognized: U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth.

Both are to be commended and thanked for these critical public safety facilities that will serve the citizens of Springfield for decades. Approximately 50 percent of the funding for these fire station upgrades came from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, which passed the U.S. Senate by just one vote.

Regardless of your political affiliation, if you support firefighters, Senators Durbin and Duckworth deserve our thanks and gratitude. These were critical votes for the passage of ARPA, which not only brought about $34 million to Springfield, but also tens of millions to School District 186 and Sangamon County, and hundreds of millions dollars through ARPA to the State of Illinois.

We look forward to the future openings of the new Station #6 at 11th and Ash Streets and the new Station #13 off Veterans and Woodside Road.

We must also thank the Springfield community and taxpayers for supporting our Class 1 Fire Department and making this critical step to improve public safety in our community possible.
