New MPD video shows officers shooting stabbing suspect

DC police have released body-worn camera footage of two officers involved in a shooting after allegedly stabbing another officer in Northwest DC.

WASHINGTON — The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has released body-worn camera footage of officers involved in a May 18 shooting in Northwest DC.

According to an MPD statement, three officers, a sergeant and a Department of Behavioral Health team member were at an apartment complex on Virginia Avenue, where they were responding to a welfare check.

In the video, released Friday evening, officers are seen apprehending Jonathan Jefferson, 28, of Northwest DC.

Jefferson appears to walk away from the officers after pulling a knife from his pocket. He allegedly hit a police officer in the neck with this knife. The video shows officers then opening fire as Jefferson and another officer fled.

At least nine shots were heard, but it is unclear which officer fired the shots.

Jefferson and the officer with the stab wound were transported to an area hospital, treated and released. Jefferson suffered a gunshot wound to the hand and a graze wound to the thigh, according to MPD. He was arrested on four counts of assaulting a police officer, and the officers involved have not yet been identified.

MPD said the incident is being reviewed by the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia (USAO) and will subsequently be investigated by the Criminal Investigation Team. forces of the MPD internal affairs office.

The video contains disturbing images and the sound of gunshots, the viewer is therefore advised to exercise discretion.
