CURRY COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – A Portales, New Mexico man has been convicted of crimes related to child abuse and assaulting police officers. He pleaded guilty in March 2024.

Alfonso Pérez, 29, was charged in two incidents, according to the Ninth Judicial District Attorney in Clovis. As a result, he was charged with several crimes, such as child abuse and four counts of battery on a peace officer.

The first crime occurred in February 2022, when he allegedly became angry with a seven-year-old child. Authorities said he beat the child with a “Louis Vuitton belt” and later the child's grandmother noticed purple bruises all over his body. This was reported and Perez was charged for the incident.

In June 2022, while awaiting trial on child abuse charges, authorities said Perez forced himself to vomit in jail. Officers attempted to enter his cell to help him, but the release said he continued to keep the cell locked. Once the police entered, he tried to fight them. Three police officers were hit and a Taser was knocked from one of their hands.

Perez was sentenced to 19.5 years in prison. He will have to serve 85% of his sentence.
