KAHULUI–Makawao's newest business, Upcountry Gallery, showcases local Maui artists who lost their primary source of income after devastating wildfires destroyed their art and the galleries that housed them.

Maui is known around the world as one of the most beautiful destinations in the world. Incredible beaches, lush rainforests, captivating waterfalls and world-class artists.

With so much beauty and inspiration around every corner, Maui has become a haven for artists who want to immerse themselves in the beauty and culture of this Hawaiian island. But after fires ravaged the art town of Lahaina, killing more than a hundred people and destroying thousands of homes and businesses, many local artists are struggling to find new galleries to display their works.

Lahaina was one of the most popular art destinations in the world, with dozens of galleries showcasing some of the island's most talented artists. Visitors from all over the world came to stroll through Lahaina, grab a bite to eat, buy souvenirs, and meet artists in person as they demonstrated their craft.

Now, these moments will only be enjoyed as memories until Lahaina rebuilds, which could take many years.

Upcountry Gallery just opened its doors last week in Makawao, a sleepy town on the slopes of Haleakala. With cute boutiques, galleries, restaurants, yoga studios and other small businesses, Makawao has a charm that attracts new and seasoned visitors alike. And with the new gallery opening its doors, more colors too.

The gallery is located in downtown Makawao at 3660 Baldwin Ave., directly across from the Rodeo General store. View the magnificent works of art in person from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, or online: @UpcountryGallery.
