PORTLAND, OregonKOIN) — The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday that a new drug detector K9 is working inside the Clackamas County Jail to combat the ongoing fentanyl crisis.

The 2-year-old Wirehaired Pointer Black Lab mix named “Gregor” will primarily patrol the county jail. However, Gregor will also work to catch drug dealers on the streets with the Clackamas County Interagency Task Force.

“The Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce that K9 Gregor and his handler, Deputy Bryson Ricker, are now on duty,” CCSO said. “Gregor underwent rigorous training to become certified by the Oregon Police Canines Association before being deployed.”

Gregor and Ricker join K9 Abbie and Deputy Eliseo Ramos, who have been patrolling the jail for drugs since 2018. With the addition of a second nose, CCSO can now conduct drug searches throughout the week.

“Deputy Ramos and K9 Abbie played a pivotal role in significantly reducing the influx of illegal drugs into the facility,” CCSO said. “The duo's efforts alone have reduced the total amount of contraband smuggled into the prison by about half since their work began.

Abbie suffered an accidental overdose while snorting drugs inside the prison in 2018. Ramos resuscitated Abbie with Narcan, saving the dog's life. Both handlers carry Narcan for their K9 partners as a precaution.
