New details released about Oakland Skyline High School graduation shooting

(KRON) — New details have been released about a triple shooting at Skyline High School's graduation ceremony on its Oakland campus. On May 23, three victims were shot as the ceremony was ending around 7:45 p.m.

According to Oakland police, the shooting resulted from a fight between two groups of people. OPD officers arrested a man in connection with the shooting.

Before OPD officers arrived at the high school, East Bay Regional Park Police Department officers were the first on scene because they were listening to the OPD radio channel and were nearby, said the park police.

Several witnesses at the scene told EBRPPD officers that the shooting suspects ran into Anthony Chabot Regional Park toward Redwood Road.

“All EBRPD units responded to the listed area. Three… male juveniles ran into the Upper San Leandro watershed area after seeing one of our officers,” Park Police wrote.

The police chased the minors, arrested one of the boys and searched him. The boy was in possession of a loaded Glock 27 pistol and a luxury Maserati car key, police said. The Maserati had already been hijacked and stolen in Oakland.

Back at Skyline High School, an EBRPD officer found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the thigh. “Our officers applied a tourniquet to the victim who was still bleeding, preventing further potentially fatal blood loss. The victim was immediately transported to a local hospital,” park police wrote. A second victim was also found at the school and a third victim was located at the hospital.

A 90-minute manhunt for the two boys at large ended when officers tracked down the duo. All victims of the shooting are expected to survive, OPD said.

The melee occurred as the ceremony was ending, and many students and families had already left campus, school district officials said. Oakland Unified School District Superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell wrote, “Some people remained on the field to finish the celebration and some staff were cleaning up. I would like to thank the Skyline and District staff who were on scene at the time and immediately responded to take control of this difficult situation until the police arrived.

Johnson-Trammell called the incident “heartbreaking and absolutely unacceptable.”

The Class of 2024 missed the middle school graduation ceremony due to the COVID pandemic and experienced their first year of high school online through distance learning, the superintendent noted.

The investigation into the triple shooting is ongoing and a $15,000 reward is being offered for information leading to additional arrests. Anyone with videos or photos is asked to email them to [email protected]. Anyone with information should call 510-238-3426.
