New details after deadly officer-involved shooting in Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas — The Lubbock Police Department on Tuesday provided more details about an officer-involved shooting that left a man dead Monday evening.

Officers were called to the 4700 block of 66th Street due to a civil disturbance just before 11 p.m.

According to Lubbock Police Chief Seth Herman, the complex manager, who called police, attempted to enter the apartment. Chief Herman said the man “charged both the manager and the officer with a knife.”

Chief Herman said the officer “engaged in fatal shooting” around 11:08 p.m.

“This was a split-second decision, and there is no doubt that the actions taken by the officer saved this third party’s life,” Chief Herman said.

Chief Herman said officers on scene, including the one who fired the shots, took life-saving measures. The man was transported to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Chief Herman said the man is considered an aggravated assault suspect. Police said they could not release the man's name.

However, close friends of the man who was killed told EverythingLubbock.com his name was 48-year-old Roy Chadwick.

A close friend of Chadwick described him as a kind person who had made mistakes in life “like everyone else”. Chadwick needed help, but couldn't get it, his friend said. Chadwick's friend said he had “been through a lot” in life and had been incarcerated before.

Despite his struggles, Chadwick's friend said he strives to live a righteous and sober life. Chadwick had already been failed by the system, his friend said, and he failed again Monday night.

Police said no officers were injured during the incident. The officer involved in the shooting has been with the department for seven years. The officer was placed on administrative leave, which is standard policy.

“LPD recognizes the trust citizens place in us and takes that very seriously when it comes to serving and protecting our citizens,” said Chief Herman.

The incident remains under investigation.
