New Castle man charged with stabbing police officer

NEW CASTLE, Ind. — A New Castle man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly stabbing a city police officer in the arm.

Dustin B. Sidwell, 36, was charged with attempted murder and criminal recklessness. He was being held in the Henry County Jail on $106,500 bail and $6,450 cash bail.

According to a news release, city police responded around 9:20 a.m. Wednesday to a report that a man armed with a knife was attempting to force his way into a home in the Vine Street apartment complex.

The first officer to arrive on the scene said he encountered a man later identified as Sidwell in the parking lot of the complex. He said Sidwell approached him and, without warning, pulled out a knife and stabbed the officer in the right bicep.

A second officer who arrived at the scene used his squad car to push Sidwell away from his injured colleague. The New Castle man then “fled on foot while still brandishing the knife,” the statement said.

When other officers arrived on scene, they ordered Sidwell to drop the knife, but he allegedly ignored these requests and ingested a substance that was later found to be methamphetamine.

After a foot chase that lasted several blocks, a police officer used an electronic stun device to subdue Sidwell, and he was taken into custody. He was taken to Henry County Hospital for an evaluation before being transported to the jail.

The police officer who was stabbed was also taken to hospital and released after treatment. The statement said his injury was not life-threatening.

The Henry County District Attorney's Office will determine what formal charges will be filed.

At the time of his latest arrest, Sidwell was already facing an intimidation charge filed in April in Henry County Circuit Court 2.

According to court records, he has been convicted of crimes including burglary (four times), domestic violence resulting in serious bodily injury and theft.
