New Bedford man Rayshond Lewis convicted in 2022 shooting

FALL RIVER — A 26-year-old New Bedford gang member was convicted this week of firing at least seven shots into a vehicle on Court Street in New Bedford in May 2022, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced.

After a three-day trial, a Fall River Superior Court jury found Rayshond Lewis guilty of attempted assault and battery with a firearm, illegal carrying of a firearm – third violation, carrying a loaded illegal firearm and theft, according to a press release.

He was sentenced to eight to eleven years in prison.

The state prison sentence will not begin until he completes a five- to 10-year state prison sentence he was sentenced to earlier this month for violating probation related to a violent 2017 home invasion.

Was in a car on the way to Ash Street Prison

On May 3, 2022, the defendant was a passenger in a vehicle traveling to Ash Street Prison.

The other occupants got out of the car to check if anyone was being held at the prison.

During this time, the defendant got up from the passenger seat and fired at least seven shots at another motor vehicle that was passing at the time.

No one was hit or injured in the incident, but bullets struck a nearby home, a porch and a parked vehicle.

The theft conviction related to an incident that occurred about a week after the shooting, in which the defendant stole his ex-girlfriend's cell phone.

“The accused is a very dangerous individual”

The trial was conducted by Assistant District Attorneys Matthew Sylvia and Shawn Guilderson, and the state prison sentence was imposed by Judge Claudine Cloutier.

“I am extremely pleased that the jury held the defendant responsible for this lawless act of violence that could have killed or injured people in the area. The accused is a very dangerous individual who has two prior convictions for firearms offences. Additionally, at the time of the incident, he was on probation for a violent home invasion in which he strangled the victim,” Quinn said.

“The court rightly sentenced him to consecutive prison terms on gun-related charges. Both sentences amount to more than 20 years in prison. Additionally, the defendant is awaiting trial for allegedly stabbing two inmates while held in a reformatory. The citizens of New Bedford will be much safer now that the accused will not be on the streets for an extended period of time.
