Nevada AG Ford calls for DOJ investigation into shooting of Black Lives Matter protester

CARSON CITY, Nev. (KOLO) – Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford and 13 other attorneys general are calling on the Justice Department to investigate the 2020 shooting of a Black Lives Matter protester in Texas.

In July 2020, Daniel Perry fatally shot Garrett Foster during a protest following the killing of George Floyd. According to media reports, Foster was carrying an AK-47 rifle when he approached Perry's car. Perry then shot and killed the Air Force veteran.

Perry was convicted of murder and sentenced to 25 years in state prison in 2023 before Texas Governor Greg Abbott pardoned the former US Army sergeant, citing Texas Basic Law.

In a letter to the DOJ, Ford and his fellow attorneys general urged them to open a civil rights investigation into the matter, specifically to determine whether Perry violated federal criminal civil rights laws.

“The murder of Garrett Foster, a man protesting ongoing racial injustices, was a tragedy and a horrific crime,” said AG Ford. “In the interest of justice, I urge the Department of Justice to investigate this matter. Actions like those of Daniel Perry must not be brushed aside.”

Ford and the other AGs also expressed concern that Texas law protects vigilantes.
