Neighbors worried, even after deadly shooting arrests at Midtown house party

TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) – KGUN 9 spoke with neighbors living next to and across the street from the Midtown home that became a crime scene after a deadly shooting at the home in late April.

This shooting killed Erin Jones, a 20-year-old student at the University of Arizona. The party was hosted by UA football players — who lived in the house at the time — and attracted both UA students and unrelated community members.

Neighbors are still very shaken by the shooting more than seven weeks later, even after TPD announced it had arrested four suspects they identified as the shooters.

Neighbors asked that their names or faces not be released because they still fear for their safety.

“It’s just something I can’t shake,” the next-door neighbor said of the tragedy. “It’s just been hard…Hard to sleep at night. I do not want to go outside.

The arrests announced this week only bring them some comfort.

“It’s a good start,” said a neighbor across the street. “It was a sigh of relief.”

“I didn’t think this would ever happen, that they were going to find them,” the next-door neighbor said. “I really didn’t, so I was shocked.”

But police also say there are still “unfinished business” related to the deadly shooting…and the investigation is still ongoing.

“I would be happier if the investigation was over,” said the neighbor across the street.

The house that hosted the party now seems empty; a side door is left open and the mailbox has fallen from its support.

A “red tag” affixed to the window to signal an unruly assembly, which should remain visible for 180 days, was partially torn off.

These neighbors say they no longer feel safe. They say they've heard more gunshots late at night in the area since the party.

They fear future house parties like this could get out of hand again and lead to another tragedy.
