Neighbors respond to home invasion turned police shooting in Las Vegas' Central Valley

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Neighbors shared their shock Friday after the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department shared details about the moments before officers attacked a home invasion suspect in the Central Valley.

“I heard gunshots,” Ernesto Garcia said. “And I said to myself: “But what was that? »

Garcia spoke with 8 News Now about what he saw when the home invasion led to a police shooting in his neighborhood Tuesday.

“I just walked out and saw all the cops here,” Garcia recalled.

Garcia Street, near Lake Mead Boulevard and Rancho Drive, was covered with crime scene tape Tuesday after police said Matthew Tindall broke into two homes armed with an eight-inch kitchen knife and tried to stab three people.

The Metropolitan Police released body camera footage on Friday showing the moment officers said they confronted Tindall.

Officers told 8 News Now that Tindall had the knife, dropped it, then tried to get it back when officers fired five rounds and shot him.

“These incidents are constantly evolving,” LVMPD Deputy Sheriff Yasenia Yatomi said at a news conference. “And so dynamic.”

Deputy Sheriff Yatomi and LVMPD Deputy Chief Dori Koren spoke about this response and several others over the past week, praising the quick action of their officers.

“Just in the last week, we’ve had a very high number of critical incidents,” Deputy Chief Koren said. “And our officers are out there, as our sheriff said, in 110-degree heat, working to keep our community safe.”

Meanwhile, Garcia said he was glad Tuesday's situation was not worse, but that he would think differently in the future.

“We have to be careful,” Garcia said. “You never know who’s trying to do something to you.”

He told 8 News Now his priority is to keep his family safe.

“It's pretty dangerous here now,” Garcia concludes.

Tindall survived the shooting and is now in the Clark County Detention Center.

He faces multiple charges, including three counts of attempted murder with an enhancement: use of a deadly weapon, two counts of home invasion with a deadly weapon and one count of assault and battery with a deadly weapon.

Tindall is due in court on July 1.

Police said no officers were injured in the altercation. One victim suffered a cut to his hand but is expected to be OK.
