Nebraska officials investigating officer-involved shooting after weekend chase; Suspects identified

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (KCAU) — The South Sioux City Police Department has identified the two suspects involved in a chase that crossed Siouxland on Saturday.

Authorities arrested Brian Leroy Church and Gwenn M. Homan in connection with a chase in which the suspects were driving a stolen Budget Rental truck in Kansas.

Church, who was initially seated in the passenger seat and moved to the driver's seat, drove the vehicle toward a police officer, leading to an officer-involved shooting in the area of ​​800 Dakota Avenue.

After the shooting, the truck hit a parked car and took off, leading to a chase that continued through Iowa and South Dakota.

The vehicle stopped near Elk Point after its tires were slashed by stop sticks.

After authorities were able to arrest Church, authorities discovered he had been hit by the gunshot fired in South Sioux City. Church was transported to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Church was subsequently arrested and charged with a felony warrant for theft out of Kansas of property over $5,000, felony operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest, and attempted assault against a police officer using a motor vehicle.

Homan, who was driving the vehicle before Church, was arrested and charged with theft by receiving stolen property totaling more than $5,000.

The South Sioux City Police Department said it would conduct “a comprehensive and thorough, multi-level review of the incident.” The Nebraska State Patrol will also conduct an independent investigation.
