Nearly 2,400 acres burned in Utah's Little Twist fire, with about 10% contained

BEAVER, Utah (ABC4) — In officials' latest update — sent Sunday — the Little Twist Fire was last estimated to be about 2,398 acres.

Wildfires originally started as prescribed burns, but they have continued to increase in size and severity. However, the fire was estimated to be around 10% as of Sunday, and officials said they had made progress in their operations.

“Firefighters successfully implemented burn operations on the north and northwest perimeters of the fire yesterday,” Utah Fire Info said. on social networks Sunday.

Officials said weather conditions were favorable, allowing ground resources to “effectively begin establishing a black line along the ridge of Little Twist Trail, where crews had previously constructed an indirect handline in in order to secure this area from the fire.

However, hot and dry conditions were expected following Sunday's fire, and officials said there was an increased risk of humidity and stronger winds accompanying a chance of precipitation in the afternoon and at the start of the evening.

“Conditions permitting, crews will continue fire operations while utilizing aerial assets for reconnaissance and bucket work,” Utah Fire Info said Sunday.

Area closures are expected to remain in effect, as authorities have said this will ensure the safety of the public and those fighting the fire. Authorities said 247 people were assigned to the fire on Sunday.

However, while area closures were still in effect, officials clarified that some campgrounds would remain open.

“Little Reservoir, Tushar Lakeside and Kents Lake campgrounds remain open to the public for camping,” officials said.

Smoke was expected to continue to be visible over the next several weeks in surrounding areas, including I-15 and I-70, as well as Interstates 89 and 20.
