Near-record heat possible this weekend in the Wiregrass | WDHN

A generally calm weather pattern will continue in the Wiregrass over the next few days. A ridge of high pressure will be the dominant feature of our weather conditions. As the high pressure system develops, scorching weather will arrive on the Wiregrass.

On Thursday, highs will be in the 90s again, but moisture from the Gulf will begin to move northward, creating sticky conditions outside. With moisture returning to the atmosphere, a shower or thunderstorm cannot be ruled out during the afternoon, but most places are expected to remain dry.

The warmest air of the year will arrive starting Friday and continue through the weekend. Highs will approach the upper 90s over the weekend, with a heat index in the 100s. The record temperature for Saturday, June 15 in Dothan is 101 degrees. It is not completely excluded that we are on the verge of equaling, or even beating, this record. Anyone participating in outdoor activities this weekend should take extra caution due to the heat.

Forecasts beyond Sunday become more uncertain, with some tropical development possible in the southwest Gulf near the Bay of Campeche. The same high pressure system that brings us warm weather could help push whatever develops in the Gulf westward to Texas and Mexico, but the forecast is worth watching.

Tropical Update:

Invest 90L brings heavy rain to South Florida and is expected to emerge into the Atlantic in the coming days. This system has a 20% chance of developing in the next 7 days.

A new area of thunderstorms in the southwest Gulf is being monitored for possible development. The National Hurricane Center has given this area of severe weather a 30% chance of developing over the next 7 days.
