Near 100-degree heat and showers will mark the start of Father's Day in Georgia

“It could approach 100 (degrees) in wetter areas where there is not much wind,” forecasters said Tuesday.

GEORGIA — Although Sunday could potentially bring afternoon showers, forecasters told Patch that Father's Day weekend is expected to be scorching for those observing the annual holiday.

After at least two weeks of rain, the National Weather Service said Tuesday that sunshine was expected all week in metro Atlanta, giving way to a warm Saturday.

Temperatures are forecast to rise into the 90s, eventually reaching 98 degrees on Saturday.

Meteorologist Steven Nelson said heat indices, or apparent temperatures, could also be in the upper 90s. Dew points could be in the 60s or near 60 this week.

“The temperature could approach 100 (degrees) in wetter areas where there's not a lot of wind,” Nelson said.

Columbus was forecast to reach 100 degrees by Saturday, a few degrees warmer than the 91 degrees predicted for Monday afternoon.

As of Tuesday morning, the forecast did not meet the criteria to issue heat advisories, although that could change as the week goes on, Nelson said. The work week will definitely be a dry week, he said.

“Normally when it's this hot, it's often dry this time of year,” he said.

A 30 percent chance of showers is expected on Father's Day in the Atlanta metro area. Nelson said that in the summer, precipitation usually arrives in the afternoon or evening.

Rain chances will return Sunday night and Monday, when temperatures could be in the upper 90s to mid-90s.

On the coast, rain is expected to begin Wednesday in Savannah and is forecast daily through Monday for the historic city.

Georgia joins other parts of the United States battling the heat this week. AccuWeather projected high temperatures for the southwest, west and northeast regions.
