NDOT installs devices to track near-miss traffic incidents in North Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – A north Nashville intersection now contains a new device that tracks traffic and pedestrian data in real time.

The Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) installed the first LiDAR device at the intersection of Clarksville Pike and 24th Avenue N. This is the first of eight devices that will be installed at various intersections from North Nashville.

Pat Davis and Margaret McKinney regularly walk along Clarksville Pike and find it particularly dangerous.

“I’ve lost track of how many wrecks there have been in this area,” Davis said. “Very dangerous because most people don't focus on the light.”

LiDAR devices are capable of tracking near misses and reporting that information to NDOT.

“Years of under-reported collisions with pedestrians and people with mobility disabilities, coupled with traditional methods of crash reporting, have left gaps in the connections between pedestrian safety and data accountability,” the executive summary states. NDOT project. “This project addresses these challenges by using technology to work toward a safer environment for citizens who use these streets through the identification of all conflict points in the study area.”

The LiDAR devices will be installed on a two-mile stretch along Clarksville Pike, Buchanan Street and Dr. DB Todd Jr. Blvd., and will be installed in the coming months.
