ncpcr awards khowai for excellence in combating child drug abuse and trafficking

NCPCR honors Khowai for excellence in combating child drug abuse and trafficking

Khowai district has been commended by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) for its successful implementation of the Joint Action Plan on 'Prevention of Child Drug and Substance Abuse and Illicit Trafficking'.

The award ceremony was held on June 30, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Nityananda Rai, Minister of State for Home Affairs, presented the award to Chandni Chandran, District Magistrate of Khowai.

The ceremony was attended by eminent personalities like NCPCR Chairman Priyank Kanungo, Member Secretary Rupali Banerjee Singh and Narcotics Control Bureau Director General Satya Narayan Pradhan.

Khowai's success is due to the effective execution of various measures, including installation of CCTV cameras in major medical stores, promotion of Prabhari club activities in schools and strict enforcement of COTPA (Act on cigarettes and other tobacco products).

Additionally, an innovative program named CHESTA (Child Marriage Elimination through Sensitisation, Tracking and Awareness), launched in November 2022 by Chief Minister Manik Saha, has proven to be a major factor.

The project was appreciated for its coverage of in-school and out-of-school girls, participation of all stakeholders and incentives for informants.

This program addresses child marriage, a major source of human trafficking in Tripura.

The success of CHESTA lies in its comprehensive approach, encompassing both in- and out-of-school girls, involving all relevant parties and providing incentives to those who report child marriages.

Police efforts have also played a crucial role, with drug seizures doubling over the past year. These combined initiatives have positioned Khowai as a leader in the fight against childhood drug abuse and trafficking.
