Navy veteran convicted in Jan. 6 Capitol riot case

WASHINGTON DC — John George Todd III, a Missouri resident and U.S. Navy veteran, was sentenced to five years in prison for his role in the January 6, 2021 riot at the Capitol. U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell handed down the sentence in a Washington, D.C., courtroom, expressing strong disapproval of Todd's actions and attitude.

During the proceedings, Judge Howell criticized Todd for showing no remorse for his actions, including carrying a fiberglass pole with a flag attached to the Capitol. She remarked, “He’s not a patriot.” This is not conduct worthy of a Marine. The sentence imposed is significantly less than the 12 years and seven months originally requested by federal prosecutors.

Todd, 34, made no statement during his sentencing, choosing not to address the court. This case highlights the current legal implications for those involved in the violent events of January 6.
