National Pride Remains Near All-Time Low on July 4, New Poll Finds – NBC4 Washington

As Americans across the country gather to celebrate the nation's founding, a new survey finds that the level of people who are “extremely” or “very proud” to be American is near an all-time low.

In the survey released this week, 41% of respondents told Gallup pollsters they were “extremely proud”; 26% said they were “very proud.”

Fifteen percent of respondents said they were “only a little” or “not at all” proud this year. That’s the second-highest rate since Gallup began asking the question in 2001. It’s only been higher in 2020.

In the heart of the nation's capital, the results were greeted with confusion and anger on July 4.

News 4 asked participants in the Independence Day parade in downtown Washington about the results, with some blaming the results on “what they’re taught in school,” the election, social media and misinformation.

Joe Hennessey of North Carolina suggested: “We're getting a little fat and lazy like the Romans, maybe. What do you think?”

Pollsters did not ask respondents why they gave their pride answers, but Gallup reported differences based on age, race and political party.

Among white Americans, 47% say they are extremely proud to be American, a 16% gap with non-white Americans.

Among Americans aged 55 and older, 54% say they are extremely proud, compared with 21% of those aged 18 to 34.

And in this election year, 59% of Republicans say they are extremely proud, compared to 34% of Democrats.

All of these results are well outside the 4-point margin of error.
