Murders of 4-year-old girl and her mother found dead in Mississippi may be human trafficking: chief

Daniel Callihan was taken into custody in connection with the deaths of Callie Brunett, 35, and her daughter Erin, 4, police said.

The arrest of a Mississippi man accused of killing a 4-year-old girl and her mother may be linked to human trafficking, according to the local police chief.

Daniel Callihan, 36, was arrested Thursday, June 13, for allegedly “committing brutal and heinous acts of violence” in connection with the deaths of Callie Brunett, 35, and her daughter Erin, 4, the office said of the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff in Louisiana. said in a statement.

Another child, a 6-year-old girl, was also found in the Mississippi area where Erin's remains were found. She was injured, but alive, Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said at a news conference. The remains of Erin and the 6-year-old were found after an Amber Alert was issued for them after Callie was found dead in her home, CNN reports.

Wade said, “Based on the crime scene, what it looks like, this could be where human trafficking occurred,” WDSU and Valley News Live reported.

Wade added: “We see cages, small animal cages. It's very, very disturbing for me as a police chief and as a father to witness and see what I saw .”

Callihan and Brunett are believed to have dated before, said Jimmy Travis, chief of the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office, CNN reports.

Callihan was arrested in Jackson, Mississippi. Victoria Cox, 32, was also arrested, Wade said. It is not yet known whether they have been officially charged. The circumstances of Callie and Erin's deaths have not yet been determined.

“Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this tragic event. These are unspeakable crimes,” Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards said in a statement. “We ask everyone to keep Callie's family in your prayers.”
