Muncie woman arrested after OWI and leaving scene after serious accident

MUNCIE, Ind. — A Muncie woman was arrested after operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a crash while a victim was lying on the side of the road bloodied and unconscious.

Crystal Star Glaze, 40, was charged with OWI: Accident With Serious Injury, a Level 5 Felony, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident With Serious Injury While Intoxicated, a Level 3 Felony .

Officers were dispatched at 9:51 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a crash with injuries near the intersection of Memorial Drive and Hackley Street. Witnesses at the scene reported that the victim was on the side of the road with his leg open.

When officers arrived on scene, they observed the victim lying in the roadway with a “significant injury” or laceration to his right leg. The victim also had visible blood on his head.

According to court documents, once the scene was cleared, Muncie police alerted the detective that the suspect could be located at 1501 E 9th St. When the officer arrived on scene, he was alerted that Glaze was “shaken ”, but that she had just started her shift at 10 p.m.

Finding a wrecked vehicle in the parking lot of the facility, the officer went inside to find Glaze and asked him some questions about what happened. Glaze responded by stating that she had “hit something.” She later said, “I was just going to work” and that she had seen a deer in the middle of the forest. [expletive] road.

Continuing to speak, Glaze then allegedly told the officer, “Why do people think they have to walk in the middle of the street? [expletive] road.” After conducting a field sobriety test, Glaze testified that she was the driver, that she hit the victim with her car and that she did not stop at the scene. She also informed the police that she suffered from alcoholism.

After being followed up at the hospital at 5:20 a.m. on Thursday, it was learned that the victim suffered three brain hemorrhages and a large open fracture to the right lower extremity.

Glaze bail was set at $25,000.
