Multiple crews respond to small explosion and fire at Valley Stream home

At least six fire departments responded to a small explosion and fire at a Valley Stream home Saturday morning.

The Valley Stream Fire Department says they received a call around 11:30 a.m.

Firefighters said some wiring at the Lutz Drive home was on fire when crews arrived. They also say there was a small explosion in the basement.

No injuries have been reported. Authorities say a homeowner burned his ear but didn't want medical attention. One occupant told News 12 everyone was OK, but he was just shaken up.

A National Grid team was still on site Saturday evening carrying out tests on some nearby homes. Crews also tore up a sidewalk and section of grass directly in front of the home where the fire occurred.

News 12 reached out to National Grid to find out how long the work would take, but had not yet received a response as of Saturday evening.

Firefighters say they arrived on scene within three minutes and crews were able to extinguish the fire within an hour and a half.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately known.
