Mr. & Mrs. Smith EP Addresses Donald Glover and Maya Erskine's Alleged Departure

Mr. and Mrs. Smith Showrunner Francesca Sloane is speaking out about recent reports claiming that Donald Glover and Maya Erskine may not return for another season of the Prime Video spy comedy-drama.

While Mr. & Mrs. Smith has been renewed for a second season at Amazon, Glover and Erskine – who play John and Jane on the series – are “not expected to return,” according to sources close to Variety. However, in a recent interview with Weekly Entertainmentthe showrunner's latest comment suggests the stars may or may not leave after all.

“I was talking to Donald about this last night and we were laughing, because a news article said, 'according to our sources,' and we were like, 'Who are these sources?'” Sloane said. “We wrote a cliffhanger, we thought about it long and hard. It was one of the first things we wrote. Why the hell – we didn't say anything – but why the hell would we ruin a cliffhanger based on a title?

While Sloane didn't specifically answer whether Glover and Erskine were actually leaving, she revealed that they haven't even started writing season 2 yet, so both stars' characters may or may not be dead.

“We haven’t even started writing (season 2) yet. Maya and Donald may be dead; they may not be dead…there will be an answer to what happened at the end of season 1 in season 2,” Sloane added.

What happened to John and Jane in season 1 of Mr. and Mrs. Smith?

As the showrunner said, the first season of the spy series ended on a cliffhanger, leaving audiences wondering whether or not John and Jane Smith survived the gunshots at the end of season 1 But according to her, there will be an answer. once season 2 hits the streamer.

The series is a reimagined story told in the same universe as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's 2005 film of the same name. It follows two strangers as they both land jobs at a spy agency that promises to offer them a luxurious life. However, having been given new identities, they must also adhere to the arranged marriage.

The 10-episode series is available to stream on Prime Video.
