MPD operation puts several suspected gang members behind bars, but most are already out on bond

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Several suspected gang members have been charged during a multi-agency law enforcement operation to clean up a portion of South Memphis. However, eight of the twelve arrests made during last Friday's operation have already been released on bail.

Memphis police said these suspects and others made Tate Avenue and Boyd Street a hub for gathering, planning and carrying out criminal activity.

Every day, Memphis police said crowds of 40 people would invade the neighborhood brandishing weapons, engaging in illegal activity and creating an environment of chaos.

Over the past three years, 340 calls have been made to Memphis police for disturbances and shootings in the area.

“Members of the community have suffered for many years, been held hostage in their homes for fear of gun violence, and some have themselves been victims of various crimes,” said Acting Police Chief, CJ Davis.

However, Operation All of Boyd, a collaborative effort between MPD, other law enforcement agencies, and the Shelby County Prosecutor's Office, resulted in:

  • 10 felony arrests
  • Two misdemeanor arrests
  • 13 handguns seized (including two stolen)
  • Two rifles seized
  • 3.7 pounds of marijuana
  • 12.4 grams of methamphetamine
  • 429 ecstasy pills
  • Two vehicles seized
  • $4,291 in cash seized

“Most of the gang members arrested during Friday night's operation were the subjects of various active arrest warrants or were persons of interest in multiple crimes over a period of months,” Davis said.

Memphis police said the goal of this operation was to take back streets that belong to good neighbors who deserve to live in peace.

“We sincerely hope that these community members feel and see the difference in this community,” Davis said.

Memphis police said this was one of several operations they planned to conduct in Memphis neighborhoods.
