MP arrested while working in detention center

A South Carolina detention center officer was arrested Wednesday morning as he arrived for work and then returned to the same facility, officials said.

Spartanburg County Detention Deputy Joey Ghant, 40, of Chesnee, faces charges of misconduct in office and accepting bribes, or influencing the action of a public employee, according to arrest warrants.

Lt. Kevin Bobo of the Spartanburg Sheriff's Office said the investigation into Ghant began about three weeks ago when Sheriff Chuck Wright's new Professional Standards Bureau, along with the narcotics division, launched a internal affairs investigation.

Bobo said a detention officer may have been smuggling drugs and narcotics into the Spartanburg County Detention Center.

During the investigation, Bobo said evidence showed Ghant received money from an undercover agent “for the purpose of planning to introduce narcotics and/or contraband into the detention center and give them to the detainees currently housed there.

Arrest warrants show the crimes occurred between May 9 and May 28.

Ghant was arrested at the Spartanburg County Detention Center Wednesday morning as he arrived to start his next scheduled shift, Bobo said.

He said Ghant was fired from his position and was booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
