MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala. (WIAT) — A woman killed when a tree fell on her Mountain Brook condominium building was identified Tuesday morning.

Mountain Brook Court condos are located in the area of Montevallo Road and Petticoat Lane. According to the Mountain Brook Fire Department, the incident occurred around 6:16 a.m. Monday and resulted in area road closures for more than an hour.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 79-year-old Suzanne Michael Wilson.

Justin Baker is the Mountain Brook Fire battalion chief. He said that's why it's important to have weather radios.

“We're very sensitive to tornadoes and we just don't think a normal thunderstorm could cause this amount of damage,” Baker said. “We had to ask the Homewood Fire Department to come help us shore up the structure to make it safe so we could do a full search and assist in the rescue. »

Baker said at least two families are without a home due to a tree falling on the building.

The tree fell as strong storms moved through central Alabama, leaving behind damage across the region and many residents without power.
