Mount Prospect Fire Department: Orion Parkview Apartments fire on West Palm Drive displaces approximately 100 people

MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill. (WLS) — About 100 people were displaced after a large fire at a northern suburban apartment complex Monday evening, firefighters said.

Mount Prospect fire crews responded around 6:45 p.m. to the 1800 block of West Palm Drive for a reported fire at Orion Parkview Apartments, firefighters said.

Heavy smoke and fire were seen coming from the building.

A firefighter suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

A tenant had to be rescued from a balcony as he ran back to the burning structure to retrieve his belongings, firefighters said.

More than 30 fire and EMS units from surrounding communities responded to the fire.

The situation was under control around 3:15 a.m. Tuesday.

About 100 people were displaced, but the Red Cross and the Mount Prospect Village Department of Social Services helped them find housing, firefighters said.

Initial reports indicate the fire likely started in the attic, but the cause remains under investigation.

The structure must be assessed by building engineers before any personnel can enter it. This seems like a total loss.
