Police investigate killing of local journalist in Sindh, amid protests over media safety

KARACHI: Police in Pakistan's southern Sindh province on Saturday said they have obtained leads in the murder case of a local journalist, Nasrullah Gadani, who was killed for fearlessly discharging his responsibilities professional, according to leaders of the media community.
The murdered journalist, associated with Sindhi newspaper Awami Awaz, was attacked by gunmen while he was traveling near Korai Goth, Mirpur Mathelo on Tuesday.
Initially, he was transferred to Punjab province for medical treatment due to lack of adequate health facilities in his home district. However, he was later flown to Karachi, where he succumbed to his injuries on Friday, leaving behind a widow and six children.
“We have already got leads, but we are waiting for the family to register an FIR (first information report),” Dr Sumair Noor, Senior Superintendent of Police, Ghotki, told Arab News, adding that the police would apprehend soon the killers.
Earlier on Tuesday, Zia Ul Hassan Lanja, the provincial interior minister, told media that geofencing had been put in place to collect evidence in the case and that some people had already been arrested.
Gadani's death came three days after the killing of a young tribal journalist, Kamran Dawan, in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal district, highlighting the threats facing journalists in the South Asian country. South.
Gadani mainly focused on stories related to corruption and injustices, thereby making powerful enemies. He took on influential figures from his region and highlighted the struggles of the ordinary citizen. His social media videos often criticized feudalism, the military and the poor governance of the ruling classes, while drawing attention to the plight of members of his community.
In his latest video, seen by Arab News, he criticized a feudal and local ruler belonging to the province's ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP), Shehbaz Khan Lund, for receiving a police protocol in Ghotki, where the incidents dacoities and other crimes have multiplied. years.

GM Jamali, president of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), strongly condemned the killing, but expressed little hope that the killers would be brought to justice.
“The killers of Gadani are unknown, while we have been protesting for the past few months for the arrest of the known accused in the Jan Muhammad Mehar case and have not seen any progress,” he said, referring to another journalist shot dead in Sindh last year. August.
“He (Gadani) also exposed the mismanagement of funds meant for development projects, shed light on the state of hospitals and courageously spoke about police complicity in the release of criminals while offering preferential treatment to owners,” he added.
Shoaib Ahmed, secretary of the Karachi Press Club and head of its joint action committee, which includes all unions and associations, informed that media executives were in touch with the family of the murdered journalist.
“The police assured us that an FIR would be registered with the consent of the family and the perpetrators would be arrested soon,” he said.
“We will not let the killers go free,” he promised.
