Mother arrested in Daytona Beach after child nearly drowns in bathtub

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida. – A mother was arrested in Daytona Beach after a child nearly drowned in a bathtub, police say.

Karina Mustafa, 29, was taken into custody on Sunday.

According to the Daytona Beach Police Department, the child's father called 911 around 12:45 p.m. after finding the child unconscious in the bathtub.

An arrest affidavit shows the child got dirty after playing with potted plants, and an argument ensued between Mustafa and the child's father.

Mustafa took the child into the bathroom and locked the door, the affidavit states. The father tried to enter the bathroom, then the two argued over opening the door, according to the report.

When Mustafa unlocked the door, the father saw the child unconscious in the bathtub, which was half-filled with water, according to the affidavit.

The father performed CPR and the child was taken to the hospital and was in stable condition, police said.

In an interview with police, Mustafa said she held the child's head underwater for “no more than a minute,” the affidavit states.

Mustafa faces a charge of cruelty to aggravated child abuse.
