Moss Point man sentenced to 35 years in prison for methamphetamine trafficking

GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) – District Attorney W. Crosby Parker said Regio Darrell Lavant, 37, of Moss Point, was sentenced Tuesday to 37 years in prison without the possibility of early release or parole for aggravated trafficking of methamphetamine. .

Lavant was found guilty on March 1.

On October 27, 2019, a Harrison County Sheriff's deputy stopped a reckless driver. Lavant was a passenger at the time.

The deputy said he smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Authorities said Lavant had nearly a kilo of methamphetamine in his backpack.

According to the prosecutor's office, Lavant traveled to Houston to purchase the drugs.

“I certainly know, having been in this courtroom, that meth destroys families, friendships, communities and economies. This contributes to homelessness and neglected children in our communities,” Judge Randi P. Mueller said during the sentencing hearing. “Meth undoubtedly destroys lives,” he added.

District Attorney Crosby Parker thanked the Harrison County Sheriff's Office for keeping the coast safe. “Meth is one of the most addictive drugs plaguing our communities. Judge Mueller’s sentence reflects that seriousness,” Crosby said.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Jasmine Magee and Assistant District Attorney Katherine Gargiulo.
