Moreno Valley wildfire rages in 32-degree heat – NBC Los Angeles

Firefighters battle a brush fire in 90-degree heat Saturday afternoon in Riverside County.

The fire was reported shortly before 12:30 p.m. near Gilman Spring Road and Alessandro Boulevard in the Moreno Valley. The fire burning in sparse vegetation grew to approximately 150 acres in a restricted area.

No structures were immediately threatened by the flames. Air tankers and water-dropping helicopters are on site.

“The fire is currently 150 acres in size and continues to burn with a rapid rate of spread,” the Riverside County Fire Department said in a 1 p.m. update.

This year, wildfires have already ravaged more than 48,000 hectares in California. As of late June 2018, that figure stood at 2,800 acres, according to Cal Fire statistics.

Parts of Riverside County are facing triple-digit temperatures this weekend and an excessive heat warning. The hot conditions will continue into next week.

The heat watch will be in effect from 10 a.m. Sunday until at least 8 p.m. Friday in the Palm Springs, Coachella, Palm Desert, Palm Desert Country, La Quinta, Cathedral City and Indio areas. Temperatures in these areas are expected to range between 110 and 118.

High temperatures around 90 degrees were forecast for Moreno Valley Saturday with light winds.
